Day 10 Logroño to Najera
29.5km, 7 hours (for some of us)
Dan 28km, 4 hours 45min
(Photos updated)
We headed off early and walked for the first 2 hours mainly in the dark. A couple of pilgrims followed us, Australian Jamie who lives know Barcelona, and new Sue from NY you who lives in Florida. The early start allowed us to catch the sunrise over the lake.
We saw a squirrel! First time for Graham and I.
More grapes, olives and almonds along The Way.
Stopped in Navarrete for coffee, and we were surprised by the ornate church in such a small town. We caught Toni here, but Dan was long gone, he had the wind in his wings today!
We missed the short cut route and took the detour through ventosa, which was a great place to stop for cold drinks.
We hoped to stop in at one of the bodegas on our way past but unfortunately it was siesta time.
We arrived at our Albergue, Dan had already checked us in a sorted out our 4 bed room. Our room cost $15 euro per person.
Visited the El Monasterio de Santa Maria la Real. In the 11th century the king of Najera went hunting and in search of his falcon entered the forest and ended up in a cave, where he found an altar with the virgin and child. The monastery was then built in that cave, and is where the mausoleums of the Kings and infants of the kingdom of Najera-Pamplona are located.
